Fire It Up! Events together with the Kansas City Barbeque
Society (KCBS) is offering the OFFICIAL KCBS Certified BBQ judging class on October
6, 2022, at the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center in Hermiston, OR. The
judging class will run from 5 PM – 9 PM. This is a rare opportunity in the
Northeastern Oregon / Tri – Cities area to become a Certified Kansas City
Barbeque Society (KCBS) BBQ Judge. If you have ever wanted to judge BBQ
competitions (just like on TV), this certification will allow you a seat at the
judges’ table before those who have not been through this training and
certification.
The class will teach the art and mechanics of BBQ judging,
and, at the end of the class, participants will become KCBS Certified BBQ Judges.
Those active or interested in competitive BBQ may also consider taking the
class as it teaches participants what the judges look for when judging.
This class will go over the primary elements being judged: Presentation,
Taste, and Tenderness. It will provide BBQ to be sampled and scored as well as
go into the history and different types of meats typically associated with a
sanctioned KCBS event.
After just a few hours of instruction, you will learn how to
grade world-class chicken, pork shoulder, ribs and beef brisket - and taste
them during the process! Class participants will be eligible to judge the
Hermiston Fall Festival BBQ Championship on the Saturday following the class
(10-8-22), as space allows.
KCBS teams are known for cooking some of the best barbeque in the world, but it
takes a dedicated team of judges to decide which is truly best-of-the-best.
Being a Certified Barbeque Judge (CBJ) means more than just getting to taste
award-winning barbeque - and deciding which barbeque wins those awards. It's
about representing and spreading the message of KCBS, which is to promote
America's cuisine - barbeque.

limited number of seats available in this in person class (this class cannot be
taught virtually).
